I'm going to go out on a limb and make the assumption that .m4 is a corrupted extension of MP4 Audio (or Video)...the same way as iTunes corrupts the extension to .m4a. I cannot find any reference to .m4 as a file type in the context of a specific media format.

That said, if that were the case, they should be playable with QuickTime or WinAmp.

Xilisoft's Audio Converter converts MP4s to MP3.
