Yesterday, there was a huge step forward for the USA, but at the same time there seems to have been a huge step back, as Prop 8 and several propositions like it, seem to have been passed across the country.

Well, that is depressing. It is. It's fucking atrocious that people will allow such small minded hatred to dictate and destroy the futures or others. But I find hope in this document and this statement:

Obama Supports Complete Repeal of DOMA.
Obama believes we need to fully repeal the
Defense of Marriage Act and enact legislation
that would ensure that the 1,100+ federal legal
rights and benefits currently provided on the
basis of marital status are extended to samesex
couples in civil unions and other legally recognized
relationships.

We may have lost those battles, but we haven't lost the war, and the Democrats now hold the Senate and the House by some margin. There's still hope.

Defense of Marriage Act is going to be one of those things people look back on and go "..How fucking backwards and stupid."

The fact he's going to support the repeal that is really awesome.

again, kind of want to cry, but in a frustrated, angry & upset kind of way. i'm keeping in mind that this whole election is a brilliant, historic moment, & it's nothing but a good thing. it's just, the hypocrisy, the stain on this clean slate for equality makes me fucking sick.

but like you said, we haven't lost the war. no time to be complacent, & i can only hope obama gets to work on these issues as well.

oh, & if one day our own government could get its ass into gear & decide that same-sex marriage is all good & groovy in britain too, that'd be great.

Dude, we have civil unions. That's all we need here. The difference between a civil union and a marriage is that the latter is supported by the church.

Heterosexual couples can have a civil union and receive the same rights as married couples; so can gay couples.

We've already done as much as the government should do on gay 'marriage' - anything else needs to be down to the individuals' respective faith leaders.

okay. okay, so that's not so bad. it's an ongoing problem with religion, then. which i expect will be ongoing for a long time.

To be perfectly honest, I think that if people want to be married in the eyes of a religion that does not acknowledge or approve of their love, then they should be finding a more suitable faith, not trying to get the church to change its rules.

i suppose - hence it being difficult, & i'd say practically impossible to reconcile religious faith with sexuality (been there, done that). but considering the power the church continues to wield over a lot of places (not so much in this country) it would be ideal if that institution could move in a more positive direction.

Attitudes need to change across the board, but in the UK at least, we have employed the fairest arrangement that basically keeps everyone happy.

i'm glad that we live in a largely secularised society in the UK. separating church from state was one of the best governmental moves, ever. & people may disagree, but i think the lack of religious motivation in most places in this country is more of a positive than a negative.

Absolutely. I think we Brits are rather more down to earth about it than some nations. We have much less in the way of Christian Evangelism, and the religious groups we do have seem to be much more dignified and - for the most part - more rational.

for once I am not thinking "oh fuck that is so unfair" I have hope that there might be some progressive change in the future!
