Ficcing in a new fandom is awkward.

So, it would seem I am planning to write a Sherlock big bang fic.

I've never done one of those before; I'm not worried about the length - fic of great length tends to be my area - and I even have a basic idea for the fic, after discussing various things with vinylsigns the other week.

I also know that it will ultimately have to be the story of their falling (and accepting that they have fallen) in love, because no one seems to have quite accomplished that fic, yet. The only getting together (if you could call it that) fics of any kind in this fandom usually involved rampant sexual escapades or one sudden deduction and a surreal snog against the nearest wall... and I just don't think it would be like that.

Slow-burning seems much more their kind of thing; something which would slip under the radar and Sherlock couldn't deduct the shit out of, because the changes would be so gradual. Kind of like watching your SO get fat; you don't notice because you see them every day, but then one day you see a picture from a year earlier and think, "Wow. No more Two for Tuesday, then."

So, I basically know what I'm writing, I just don't know how to set it out. May have to occupy myself with a fanvid in the meantime... Hm.



ETA: And for the record 'The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot' would make an excellent Sherlock song. But I don't think I'll vid that one.

Anyways. The anon meme has been the progenitor of the more abrupt okay-get-to-the-snogging writing, and I expected that, but I wouldn't say things are completely without promise outside the scope of the meme :) I've been mostly into the fics that have really nice UST to sink my teeth into, because they're usually set up a bit later in their acquaintance and there's vaguely defined time lapse where my imagination can fill in the gaps--the ones by entangled_now come to mind (and I know, a bit fluff as well, but she characterizes so well).

We haven't had an epic longfic quite yet, which I'd appreciate because, yes, I see them as a very slow burn romance. Possibly people aren't comfortable writing Sherlock and John outside their first few months/a year on?

This is very important, definitely. Fics where Sherlock is confused and tries to deduce it are fun and all, but really, he should be too, I dunno, emotionally inept to deduce his & John's relationship. Even for someone like John, it's difficult to define something that's so constantly shifting and very not-normal as the two of them.

In The Great Game, I was pretty shocked at how much Sherlock let his mask slip in front of Moriarty, but not as much as Sherlock didn't seem to be able to predict that A) John would be taken hostage and B) it would affect him tremendously. He has an emotional blindspot where John is concerned, and in that instance he was jolted into figuring it out, yet I don't think he's very good at being able to recognize it. You could go completely AU with the events of the show and slow would still be the way to go.
