It's pretty much like that in most bandoms. There were factions like that when I used to do the boyband thing years ago and no amount of being told how much the bands thought they were sad by the security guys would convince them of how ludicrous their behaviour was.
Like you, I've had a lot of opportunities to be around and talk to people I admire and respect. I've drank in bars with family members of bands - by their invitation. I've met some really nice people - both famous and not. Some of my best mates are as a result of band following and con going. Yes, I feel privileged to have met these people, but special? Not really. I abhor that kind of attitude in fandom, for whatever reasons it is generated.
