We are Damned.

Show was awesome. Andy has shaved and cropped his hair. Joe looks super happy and Keith is looking hotter, now he's a bit fat.

And I would say, given that after everything it was Joe asking me for a friendly hug when we had to go tonight, fandom failed.

Proper update when I get home.

Goddammit.

The other day, I read an awesome story by [livejournal.com profile] coricomile, which was a very long and well-written Patroh piece.

It made me miss writing in bandom so badly, and reminded me of all those stories I was writing and never finished. It also made me miss Fall Out Boy, which is probably worse. I'm seeing The Damned Things on Saturday, and I have never been so proud of Joe and what he's accomplished, but god, I still hanker for the early noughties and chubbiness and awkward, bambi limbs crammed into tour vans...

I did think about going back to bandom fic after Joe made That Comment to me, but I don't know. It's hard, not having really written for a year. Eighteen months, in the case of TWNW. I would still love to finish that fic, but I doubt I ever will. There was so much to fix.

Damn.

I'm supposed to be working on the Shelock bigbang, but I just can't get into it, because I'm thinking about bandom.

I just said most of this to [livejournal.com profile] coricomile, [livejournal.com profile] supercasio and [livejournal.com profile] doctor_denmark one way or another, so I figure I may as well say it here, too...

I think the thing to remember is that this is Pete. Pete has been doing shit like this for years and after every album, people have been sure they were on the verge of breaking up.

People are bugging them within a few months of clocking off for what they perceived as a lengthy holiday, it's hardly surprising that he can't imagine coming back yet. When you go home for the holidays are you thinking about going back to school or work? Hell, no! You're thinking how much time you get to spend with your family, your bed and doing all the stuff you can't do the rest of the time.

They have been being Fall Out Boy for the better part of the last decade. Even when they last had a break, it was continually interrupted by shows and publicity. Pete'll get bored soon enough and will probably be bugging them to work on the next album, in a couple of weeks. Frankly, he's probably just feeling emo and neglected right now because Andy and Joe are in a band that is being taken seriously (something it's worth noting that FOB haven't entirely achieved, of late), and Patrick is always busy hanging out with his new best friend, Home Studio.

Part of me thinks that maybe, after years of the band saying, "We'd be nothing without Pete, we can't do this without Pete," their forrays into actually, y'know: doing things without Pete has spooked him and wounded him a little bit. Even Patrick - the shy, introverted, self-conscious little kid they made to sing - is doing an album by himself and starting out in the industry on his own merit. That must be hugely jarring (and awesome, from a friend's perspective, but scary and jarring none the less). Is it any wonder he feels like they've grown apart and that he's unsure of his place in the band, now?

All the fans harrassing them for times and answers is just going to result in ill-thought-out comments (like this one) and snap decisions that people will regret.

Leave them to it and if coming back is right for them, that's what they'll do. If it's not, then give them the chance to come to that realisation through their personal growth and consideration, and on their own terms.

As much as the fans like to think differently, we don't own them, they're not our toys (even if we borrow the concept of them for fic, at times). When they're ready, they'll make their choice - but nothing that has been said in the last twenty-four hours is an announcement of any great finality. Keep Calm & Carry On.

I thought I'd give up there for a while, but TWNW 17 is virtually complete. It'll be up today, guaranteed.

Anyone want to give it a read-through before I post?

Edit: I do believe that's done. Betas?

I kind of want to write an early days fic in which Joe and Patrick are referred to by Pete as Jay & Silent Bob and that's where Patrick's 'Lunchbox' nickname comes from.

Ficathon thing

Everyone go join this:

Basically, it's a ficathon writing stuff based around the new laws/changes Barack Obama wants to pass (gay couples adopting, civil unions/marriages, hate crimes). It's a pretty cool concept, knowing how into him a lot of bandom are.

Plus: someone needs to fulfill my goddamn prompt whenever I think of one.

Fail.

Whoever thought they would be cute and post my information on www.4chan.org - I've contacted the administrator. Your IP will be banned and provided to me.

Might just be time for you to grow up, yes?

I know you're obviously deeply jealous of me for some bizarre, misguided reason - and I don't quite know what it is, although people have suggested a number of things - but you honestly do need to get a life, at this stage. Whatever ridiculous misconceptions about my life drive you to waste so much of your time on trying to rile me and expounding energy on hating me, you're really only spending hours of your own life that you will never get back, on someone who just rolls their eyes and changes their account settings.

I don't even hate you - I feel sorry for you for being quite that sad. Honestly, just go and get a make over or something that will make you feel genuinely good about yourself, because this is really quite lame and isn't going to make you like yourself any more in the long term.

And for what it's worth - the kids from 4chan are actually really courteous and polite. Maybe you could take a few pointers from them.

It's so funny seeing how bitter the kids in fandom are.

If you can't take the heat, children...

The thing is, forcing these bands on people isn't encoraging people to get into them; often, it just means that your own fans get sick of hearing about them and become more resistent to them.

The early Decaydance bands were genuinely good acts - I count Cobra and TAI amongst some of my favourite current acts - but the newer stuff is less original and come with obnoxious fanbases that nobody wants to have to endure at your shows.

Also, it has to be said: FIVE BANDS is way too many on a bill. Nobody gets a decent length set and your own fans are forced to stand up through acts many of them can't stand in order to enjoy a reduced length set from the band they are actually there for.

I get that these bands are on your label, and you want to promote them, but it's to the detriment of your own fanbase.

for the record, only two of these bands are on my label. two are not.

WE will continue to support our friends and bands that WE think are good and offer something to the bill.

As far as you feel about decaydance is a personal opinion. I wish more people had supported bands like the hushsound but it simply was not the case. i get it, the new stuff is not your cup of tea. thats ok. i never did this label for anyone except myself. i was told not to sign panic at the disco and gym class heroes by everyone i spoke to. there are bands that i feel deserve to be championed and therefor choose to.

i have found that often it is less what the music is but what age or state you are in when the music hits you. i have found this in my own life personally. my tastes change and mature as i grow and bands that i fell in love with, that took me through the most miserable parts of my teenage years wouldnt hit me the same if they came out now. its often nostalgic ears that we listen through.

people have complained when we have had three band bills, people complain that they cant get into the secret smaller shows we do, people complain that venues are too big.

all that i have taken out of this is that we as a culture have our own opinions and we dont mind expressing them.

i appreciate that.

we have toured with nfg, shiny toy guns, midtown, bayside, from first to last... honestly, we tour with bands that we like and sometimes with bands that we hope our fanbase will enjoy.

honestly, if you dont like the tour you should either show up late and just see FOB (if you live in the states), not come to the show at all, or lobby to become our booking agent and book the tours from now on.

didnt mean for this to be brutal but id like for you to know the truth. either way, i am sure people who love our hate certain bands on the tour are able to schedule their lives so they see the ones that they want to see.

take care.

ps "pete" doesnt decide the line-ups for fall out boy. the entire band, our management and our booking agents do. we also do not decide the routing for our tour but when someone makes a suggestion we put that forth to our agents.

not sure how to login to my account here so i wont be replying again as im sure some fakes will begin to do so. if you want i will reply over at the clandestine.buzznet one.

Oh, bandom. I'm facepalming so hard at you right now.

This bullshit is going to do nothing except - if it gets any acknowledgement whatsoever - make Fall Out Boy fans look like bigger tossers than we're already taken for and result in the gosshit mongers claiming that Pete is getting his fans to start a vendetta against the magazine because he doesn't like how he's portrayed.

He is the one who will get more shit for the fans' behaviour and made to look like even more of a villain. Smart. That's totally going to help and make him want to come back to the internet, isn't it?

Grow up.

If this article is taken so far out of context, how come it's largely things they've said before and didn't complain about then? Patrick probably leaves the band on a weekly basis when he throws a tantrum. Andy is ridiculously obsessed with the Packers and has a huge temper; he's not nuts (well, alright - maybe a little bit, in a lovable way), but I don't think it was ever meant to be taken that seriously. Pete wasn't portrayed all that badly, really - no worse than in any other article and especially not in his interaction with Ashlee; that was adorable - and Joe has ALWAYS been this little emo thing. Go read his ancient teenage posts where he wants to Nair his face and complains that nobody wants to date him because he's too nice. He's always been adorably neurotic. I do feel really bad for him that he apparently feels that way about the band - the comments on AP.net should be evidence enough that we think he's amazing - and I've been saying he was getting a raw deal for nearly two years. But maybe this, if nothing else, will hold up that mirror that says, "Yeah, okay - maybe we need to take a look at how we do things around here." If AP is anything to go by, Joe and Patrick have already had that conversation and are working on it.

The kid deserves more credit and more of a chance to be involved, end of story.

Is it the best article ever written? No. Is writing to KANYE FUCKING WEST going to help? No. It's going to make you, me, Pete and everyone else look like a complete prat.

Just chill out. Pete is sulking; he'll be back. He always is. John Mayer is probably cuddling him as we speak.

Seriously. UNNECESSARY DRAMZ. Pls to be stopping nao.

You know what I hate? Those middle bits in stories. The bits where you've got all the important set-up down, and you have all the plans for the latter sections, but you get stuck down in a no man's land of Relevant But Boring to Write (Hopefully Better To Read) in the middle.

I always have that in fic. The little lull where I can't wait to write some part, but in the meantime you have to plough through the connection section and you just can't get motivated enough.

Meh.

Apparently, I'm "racist".

That is genuinely brilliant.
