I'm going to do some recs of fics I loved, but which never receive enough credit for their awesomeness. There are some great fics out there, like
BDSM by
heyginger, which have already received a lot of praise, so I'm going to leave those out and focus on the lesser-known ones.
I've switched my journal to registered users for commenting, for a while, so feel free to join me in this and promote it elsewhere.
In no particular order and mostly Patroh, because that's all I read:

The Patron Saint of Liars and Fakes -
likethepaint at
paintedfiction. This fic was the start of a great friendship, for me, but more than that it's a great, intuitive fic dealing with the worst imaginable situation - the violent death of a loved one - with an understanding and intuitiveness far beyond Matte's age. She was sixteen when she wrote this. I was gobsmacked.

The Wrong Kind of Fairy -

dontcrybaby. Crackfic. CRACKFIC. PATRICK IN A TUTU! I adore the characterisations in this story, and Lin has an excellent sense of humour and really brings out the quirkiness in Joe's nature. She has a brilliant imagination and thinks of things, details, that would never, ever occur to me. I love this fic so much I did an illustration for it. Go see.

ficjournal. Teenage angst - something I'm famously fond of in fandom. Here is a fic which deals with one of the many awkward, clumsy ways my OTP could have gotten together - and the awkwardness is so genuine that you will full-body cringe in all the right places. A genuinely sweet fic.

Something Shakespeare Never Wrote -

sometimes_why. I adore this fic. The opening lines are so perfectly characterised, and entire tone is so sweetly tongue-in-cheek. It is the first and only Mpreg I have ever read and enjoyed, and in writing my own I continually find myself wondering if it's worth it, given the awesomeness of this fic. I am so keen for people to read this story that I have given them my LJ log-in details to access it, before it was public. Surely that's testimony enough?

Four Snippets of Life in the Apartment -
likethepaint, again. The Apartment days - so deeply entrenched in bandom mythology and yet so rarely covered. Matte did another amazing job with this fic - capturing the self-conscious development of their friendship and Pete's envy, through tiny details and quirks that bring the story to life. You imagine things really being like this, as you read it, and you can see yourself doing exactly what he does, when he hears - thinking exactly the same way.

Young Wild Things -
xdearlin, again. I cannot begin to tell you the amount of work which went into this fic. And frankly, the notes after the story - which is an adorable 'tail' (hah!) of German folklore and supernatural powers all wrapped up in angst and puppies - are just as interesting as the fic itself. I know Lin is quite proud of this fic, and she has every right to be. It's a great story - I read it again weeks after it was finished and I'd forgotten how sweet it was. You'll love it.
Joe/PatrickFor all I know, you guys may have all read all of these stories - but in this fandom people can be ridiculously lax with commenting, so it's really hard to gauge. If you do read these fics, why not drop the writer a line? Or tell someone else about the fic - pass it on. Encourage people to read what they usually wouldn't. If you have a fic you love, which you think deserves more credit - post it here. There are some brilliant writers and fantastic stories out there which deserve more credit. Your turn.
