The enclosure I mentioned and linked to means that you can take the old laptop's hard drive and plug it into the new laptop, then copy off all your old data. It'll be pretty easy to do, although you'll have to have a screwdriver (to get the old hard drive out) and be able to plug in three cables. Then you can copy the lost photos off the drive with ease - just drag & drop!
As I have one here, I'm happy to drop round and do all that for you, provided we can find a convenient time...
