The Horses' skull is the Mari Llwyd, which depending on where they do it can be f***ing terrifying: http://www.folkwales.org.uk/mari.html
Nov 4th is Mischief Night, especially in Yorkshire. Called "Miggy Night" in some places. Also Goosey Night, Tick-Tack night, Corn night, Trick night and Mizzie Night :)
Was it one of those? Can't find anything on "six months on from Walpurgisnacht" or related like that... there's a couple more on Apr30/May1, copying that one.
As resources for this sort of thing go, she's the best I can think of :) There's a couple of books in the shop which might have it in... maybe I should go and spend money dammit.
Found this in the latest issue of Pagan Dawn: "Soul Caking" or "Souling" - people still perfom traditional mummer's plays and morris dances around All Soul's Day. Part of it involves the entrance of "The Wild Horse" which leaps around the crowd snapping his jaws and frightening passers-by. The head is actually a painted horse's skull."
They're in Antrobus (http://www.answers.com/topic/antrobus-soul-cakers), Comberbatch and Great Budworth, amongst others: http://tdrg.group.shef.ac.uk/Gallery/Cheshire_Souling_2002.htm
