I'm talking to Jay about the differences between the UK and the US, and he just complained that the price of gas/petrol over there is $3.00 per gallon.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

*keels over and dies of teh funneh*

(Non-Brits: we pay that per litre.)

I saw the story about it hitting an 'all time high of $3' and Americans getting all upset about it the other day and thought the same thing. It is so stupid!

Checked UK prices, which are about £4.39 a gallon, and as the dollar is now at $2.08 to the pound they are practically getting free petrol over there compared to us.

It seems you can pretty much get things in the US at around the same amount or less of dollars as you would pay over here in pounds. You have so picked the best time to go and visit - you will be rich over there.

Hell, I would practically be rich over there right now.

Yeah, but as Jay did just rightly point out - their public transport is practically non-existent and they all have much further to travel.

It may be cheaper, but they use way, way more.

One thing to keep in mind from the perspective of an American, most cities in the UK have reasonably decent modes of public transit, its a city, there are buses, trains, taxis etc. as your transportation option. For many cities in the U.S. the need for a car is built into the city, public transit sucks and neighborhoods aren't designed with the necessities (food, pharmacy, shops) in mind. When I lived in New York I had no idea what gas prices were, if I needed to get somewhere I caught the train, where I'm currently living if I took the bus to work I'd have to transfer buses two, maybe three times and my short 5 minute drive gets turned into a 30-45 minute saga.
Granted it doesn't change the cost of gas, but to me at least high gas prices aren't so alarming when I have real options.

Yeah, that's pretty much what Jay said. But we have to pay four times as much for what public transport we do have, as well.

London is a fucking rip off.

I think Americans should start paying that much and THEN maybe they'll start do something actually productive about climate change (like making public transport better and more available). I know the high prices affect the working poor most, but dude. If there's no planet there's no place for ANYONE.

SRSLY.

I really am amazed at the shittitude of their public transport.

To get to work in the morning via car.

Leave - 7.15. Arrive at work. 7.55 ish.

Distance, 30 miles. Cost, about £3.00 in petrol right now.

To get to work in the morning via public transport.

Well... I guess I'd have to get the bus to my town, then the bus to school town, then a bus to school. The time I've done it (once) it cost me £6.00 in fares and took 2 hours. (It was a saturday)

What normally happens if I need to use public transport is Dave drives me to the station. £1 of fuel.

Train £3.50

Bus £1.00

Total, £5.50. Time, 2 hours.

Public transport once you're out of the cities isn't brilliant over here either.

Bus fare for the journey into college for the year is £1,500. I KID YOU NOT. As a student I get it discounted to £390 or something, but it is around about £1,500 just to get the same ticket as an adult, and even then I have to walk a mile to my destination. And it makes a 15 minute drive into an 30-45 minute drive, plus a 15-20 minute walk.

It might be better here, but it's still quite shitty.
