So, then, [livejournal.com profile] bandom_awards.

We just declined to promote it on [livejournal.com profile] trohslashstump. Mostly, neither Lin nor I are comfortable with the way we've seen these go in the past. Essentially, the better-known writers in the most common ships will be the ones who win. Even if virtual un-knowns are nominated, they rarely win and for a community centred around a rarer ship with three full-time writers and not much else, it seems pretty pointless.

All we can see it doing, is leaving the few people who occasionally do attempt to write fic kind of disillusioned. People in bandom really suck at leaving feedback (when I think of the essays I used to get every chapter, for my HP fic, back in the day, I'm kind of shocked by the contrast) so when the lesser-known writers are getting maybe four "That was cute!" comments and then the really well-known (and not necessarily that brilliant) writers are getting loads of minions telling them how awesome they are and go and win these kind of things it must really fucking suck for everyone else.

It just doesn't feel very productive to me.

the complete dichotomy between how fucking awesome the bandom is & how much it sucks hurts my head.

Well, exactly - these things are popularity contests, not really awards for capability and talent.

I've been nominated in other fandoms a few times, but I just feel kind of bad when I am. One awards I actually asked not to be included in.

I don't want to say, 'I don't wantto be nomitated' in this one, because that would be insanely arrogant and presumptuous, but yeah... not sure how this is going to pan out.

I am probably at the very top of the list of people in bandom who suck at feedback.

This sort of thing would be awesome if it would work. But even if they had a category for each paring, or a "lesser known writer" category it still wouldn't work. People will find a way to vote for their friends no matter what you do.

I used to think the mark of a good fic / author was winning these sorts of things / getting put on [livejournal.com profile] letterbomb but now I'm pretty sure it's mostly just a mark of being generic and overrated.

I lost interest in [livejournal.com profile] letterbomb___ when I realised she was just reccing the same people all the time.

I totally get that people have favourite writers, but unfortunately, hers aren't mine.

I have it on my friendslist, but it's just another thing I pretty much scroll straight past. I probably read about 1% of the fic I see on my flist these days though.

I only read Patroh, so yeah. I read yours or Lin's.

So, will you be annoyed or insulted if I nominate you? Because in a way, it's nominating a friend and I can see how that'll happen a lot and a reason to be against this whole thing... but you're also genuinely one of my favourite writers in bandom, and one of three people I consider to be consistent in the quality/awesomeness of their work.

Offended? Dude, not at all. It'd be an honour that you think my fics are worth it.

I'm just a bit uncomfortable with awards altogether. Especially being one of three writers who actually bother with my ship, you know?

If you want to, I won't say don't, but I won't be mentioning it here. I'll let people vote on the basis of whether they've bothered to read the fic or not.

Frankly, though, a Joe/Patrick fic isn't going to win anything if it doesn't have it's own category.

Oh, I would never expect you to pimp yourself out. Nor would I be telling people to vote for my nominations. I'm all about people winning on their own merit, and unfortunately that's unlikely to happen as people won't read every story in every category and instead vote for the names they recognize... but that doesn't change the fact that I think you deserve your work thrown into the proverbial ring. :)
