In two hours, one of my best friends flies to Japan by himself for six weeks.

He's been wanting to go for a long time, he's saved up every penny for this himself.

But I just feel nervous. He's a big dude, 22 years old, but so trusting and sweet.

I hope this goes well for him, I really do, but I just can't help feeling anxious.

Wow. That's a brave thing to do.
I'm sure he'll be fine. :)
I know a guy who is in Japan right now teaching women to speak English.

i spent a couple of weeks in japan a few years ago, and from my experience, i'm sure everything will be fine! our group found most of the people to be very friendly, and since he is only 22, i doubt he will have any worries, especially with the younger crowds. most people are able to speak at least a bit of english, even the older citizens. if you are able to get a hold of him, even just to send him an email, a great tip is for him to carry a pad of paper and a pencil/pen with him everywhere for when he goes to eat. in most restaurants they display all the meals they make in a glass case out front, and instead of having to go sit down, then have the waitress take him back out front to point out what he wants (assuming he speaks only a little japanese), instead write the japanese characters of the meal name on the paper and give it to the waitress. they will love him for that and it makes eating 10 times easier and more relaxing.

do you know where all he is going while he is there? don't let him forget to take a ton of pictures!!! and if he likes sushi, tell him not to pass up the little restaurants he'll pass walking around the bigger cities. they are WAY cheaper than the really fancy places and taste just the same.

hugs!!!
