Tuesday, 13 May 2008 02:14 pmLast year, when I was in Chicago, I had a hotdog and curly fries on Navy Pier. The fries came with a really thick, bright yellow, cheese sauce. It was like someone had taken cheese slices and melted them. And it was delicious.
I hadn't thought about it at all for ages - but this morning I actually woke up craving it.
This makes me sad. We don't have it over here, as far as I know. DX
I need to go back to Navy Pier and have some. Julie and I have kind of decided to go back for a couple of weeks, next summer, so we can really enjoy the place. It'll be awesome. But I still want the goddamn cheese sauce.

on 2008-05-13 02:22 pm (UTC)I kind of wondered if there was some kind that you could buy in a bottle at the supermarket or something...
But I guess it's just more incentive to save for the holiday!

on 2008-05-13 10:28 pm (UTC)I think the best places to try would be the Canadian shop, followed by places like Harrods and Fortnum and Masons.
I just did a quick search and the Odeon chain seems to put nacho cheese sauce on their nachos though I do not think that is where I had it. It might not be the same either.
There is a discussion here about trying to make it with UK ingredients - but some small shops sell something called 'Galtee Irish cheese' in blocks or slices which is, I have been told, as near to American cheese (of the 'Velveeta' sort) as you will find over here. It might make a good nacho sauce with the other ingredients needed.

I'm going to have a look around and see what I can do.

Shit, I hope that wrapped. :P
Anyway, if you absolutely cannot stand the cravings, I'll send you some of both. The Cheez Whiz is normally refrigerated, but I don't think it has to be until it's been opened. The canned stuff, being canned and all, travels just fine. I don't know that either of them are actually dairy, per se, so they might make it through just fine.
