Last year, when I was in Chicago, I had a hotdog and curly fries on Navy Pier. The fries came with a really thick, bright yellow, cheese sauce. It was like someone had taken cheese slices and melted them. And it was delicious.

I hadn't thought about it at all for ages - but this morning I actually woke up craving it.

This makes me sad. We don't have it over here, as far as I know. DX

I need to go back to Navy Pier and have some. Julie and I have kind of decided to go back for a couple of weeks, next summer, so we can really enjoy the place. It'll be awesome. But I still want the goddamn cheese sauce.

I would send you some of that cheese somehow if I thought it would stay edible. :\

Aw, thanks hon.

I kind of wondered if there was some kind that you could buy in a bottle at the supermarket or something...

But I guess it's just more incentive to save for the holiday!

That sort of cheese is everywhere in America, but I don't really know if they sell it in bottles. I know that my school uses it when they do Nacho Night. Want me to ask Gary where they get it?

*laugh*

I'll write him a note when I go down to dinner this evening. Hopefully it's something that you can find in England- if not I can't imagine that sort of cheese spoiling very easily. I'll send some over.

Thanks. Do you happen to know what type of cheese she uses?

god i wish i could remember. i'd check my pantry, but we just had nachos last night and my mom used it. when she gets back i'll ask her. i know they sell velveeta cheese that you can heat up real quick, though. i don't think she uses that kind, but i'm still a fan of it.

Cool! Thank you. I probably won't be able to get it in this country anyway, but I'd love to try.

i wasn't sure if you'd be able to find it in your country either, but it's definitely worth a shot! if not, it's always more incentive to save like you said. be sure to eat it when you make another trip to the U.S.

Is there a Taco Bell in London? I don't remember seeing one...but I wasn't really looking for it. If you can find one, your best best is to order some kind of Nachos, and they will come with that cheese. You can probably even order a side of it :)

No - no, Taco Bell. And over here we use normal cheddar on nachos, sadly. :(

I am sure I have had nacho cheese/cheese sauce somewhere over here as I can imagine the texture taste and look of it right now!

I think the best places to try would be the Canadian shop, followed by places like Harrods and Fortnum and Masons.

I just did a quick search and the Odeon chain seems to put nacho cheese sauce on their nachos though I do not think that is where I had it. It might not be the same either.

There is a discussion here about trying to make it with UK ingredients - but some small shops sell something called 'Galtee Irish cheese' in blocks or slices which is, I have been told, as near to American cheese (of the 'Velveeta' sort) as you will find over here. It might make a good nacho sauce with the other ingredients needed.

Thanks.

It's really hard to get cheese and dairy into the country, which sucks.

I'm going to have a look around and see what I can do.

This really did make me laugh, because I hate that cheese. It tastes fake to me, and I don't like the texture at all. That said, there are several varieties available here. Cheez Whiz is a jarred cheese food that's available at supermarkets. It's not bad for making things like broccoli, cheese and rice casserole, dips and stuff like that. Eating it straight from the jar makes me cringe, but I like it better than the commercial cheese sauces. Food service cheese sauce comes in big cans, like paint. It's kinda like orange colored, somewhat cheese flavored glue, and people seem to love it.

Here's a couple of links: http://www.kraftfoods.com/cheezwhiz/

Shit, I hope that wrapped. :P

Anyway, if you absolutely cannot stand the cravings, I'll send you some of both. The Cheez Whiz is normally refrigerated, but I don't think it has to be until it's been opened. The canned stuff, being canned and all, travels just fine. I don't know that either of them are actually dairy, per se, so they might make it through just fine.

Aw - thank you, hon. I found a website that imports food from the US, and I think they should have some.

Thank you for the offer, though!

Is this not the same kind of cheese you get at Eds when you get cheesy fries? I only ever get cheesy chilli fries with that not-quite-cheese stuff on in American diners. Is it maybe also similar to the cheese that comes on certain kinds of cinema nachos?

I like this, it's like being a cheese detective.
