I just applied for a job with a major international company in the North West Chicago area.

I don't know if I'll get it (I doubt I will, on account of the fact they'd have to sponsor me) BUT I thought. "Why not?"

The chance of an email saying, "No thanks" over the opportunity to live and work in Chicago? NO BRAINER. I am SO FUCKING QUALIFIED for this job.

Thanks, hon! It really would be amazing. It's like a few miles from Arlington Heights which I know would crack me up every time I passed it.

I hope you do get it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Good luck.

The cost of living is really high in that area, but it can't be worse than where you are now. Just keep that in mind with salary talk, and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

See, I don't know what constitutes a high cost of living, over there. I don't know what the average rent would be or anything, you know?

I expected it to translate as £:$ as it does in many areas of the economy, but it seems not to be the case...

The NW 'burbs are pretty pricey. Barrington and all its variants (Barrington Hills, etc.) are outright wealthy, and places like Hoffman Estates, Lombard and Schaumberg are definitely upper income. The closer you get to the city itself, the more price goes down (with exceptions, of course.) You also have to remember that I'm from the NW IN portion of Chicagoland, which is the most affordable section because of the lower taxes and all that when you get across the state line, so my perception might be a little skewed vs. yours, since you've been living in a high cost area for a long time.

I don't think Arlington Heights itself is too ritzy, and there have to be pockets of reasonable living out west or maybe slightly south, towards O'Hare. I can do some poking around a bit if you'd like.

I'll give you an example: we're possibly moving back to that area (long story, and I'm kinda freaked out, but that's beside the point!) so I've been comparing prices. You know what city I live in, and we now have a 3 bed 1.5 bath house, around 1300 square feet. Nothing fancy, in a solidly middle class, kids and dogs neighborhood with a good sized yard. We paid a little over $100k nine years ago, but even with the housing market decline, a house like ours would range anywhere from $135k to $175k, depending on where it was located in the Chicago area. My hometown literally doesn't have a single property listed for under $125k, and apartments are listed for at least $700 a month for a one bedroom in a good area. There are plenty of cheaper ones in lousy areas, and a gal like you who isn't worried about schools and kid things has more options open to her, but in the area you're talking about you're gonna have to make some good money just to get by. On the plus side, employers know that, so jobs do tend to pay well in the more expensive areas.

Thanks, hon. The job itself is actually in Hoffman Estates, but the likelihood of me getting it is teeny tiny.

They do have more central offices, though, so hopefully I'll be considered for one of those. This company is so huge it has its own recruitment section built in.

I knew the North 'Burbs were really pricey - I've been there and seen the houses O_O - but we'll see. It's all very pie in the sky at the minute. I can't even drive, yet!

Teeny tiny is still a chance, so I'm choosing to think positive. They'd be lucky to get you, and they just need to figure that out. :)

My little working class self went to a wedding in Barrington a few months ago, and I could not believe the houses! Million dollar homes, real mansions rather than the McMansion variety, were just sitting there in groups, like it was a real neighborhood. I don't know that I've ever felt my station in life so acutely as when we drove up and down Barrington Road.

I know, dude. We couldn't believe the place. I have video footage of Winnetka and Evanston that I could show you. It's pretty fucking impressive when you come from the area I grew up in.
