If this is true, I will not be giving them a penny for this album.
What the fuck is wrong with a Fall Out Boy album just being Fall Out Boy? Yeah, they can pull off the odd cameo - Justin Pierre with a very subtle backing vocal; someone on guest keyboards, maybe - but why stuff like this?
I hate rap. I hate it, almost without exception. I'm not even exaggerating when I say it gives me headaches. I can't listen to a full GCH album, even. I do like Kanye, and I do like some of his songs. But they're his and I listen to them maybe one at a time, and rarely. When I listen to Fall Out Boy, it's Fall Out Boy I expect to hear. Not some kind of cabaret of artists artists from a genre I largely loathe.
I just honestly don't get why they'd do this. It was like bringing out Lupe Fiasco in the middle of their set at the Chicago HCT - more than half the crowd stood there looking bemused and clapped politely. He wasn't why they'd turned up, and after that waiting, they didn't particularly appreciate his set interrupting their show. It's likely to be the same with this album.
Before anyone REALLY PISSES ME OFF by saying it's "their album and [I] don't have to buy it" - I don't plan to, if this is what it's going to be. But I will be extremely disappointed because I've been waiting for this album as much as anyone else has. I don't expect them to carry on making the exact same album over and over, I even understand that they've grown up since they started making albums, but I'm sick of having hip hop forced into my record collection.
The thing is, Fall Out Boy are regarded as a rock or pop-punk band, and that is the genre that the majority of their fans will be into. Rock and hip hop may occasionally cross over - but they are not the same thing. If this turns into what amounts to a collaboration of FOB+assorted hip hop artists, I can really see them alienating a lot of fans. There will be some, of course, who will love whatever they put out because of the fact it's got 'Fall Out Boy' on the case - but those for us for whom the actual music is an issue that isn't necessarily nullified by who is making it, our favourite band basically abandoning the genre that made them isn't going to be okay.
I love these kids, and it's my loyalty to them and knowing that they can make some pretty awesome music, from the first three albums they put out, that stopped me giving up on them over Infinity on High, which was the biggest load of shit anyone in bandom has ever put out.
fadefromblack and I used to spend hours talking about how it was just a bad album - a blip on the radar - but it seems like we were wrong.
If this really does happen, and they ruin their album by putting Lil Wayne or any other hip hop artist on there, I will have the same situation I had in the Harry Potter fandom: anything after the fourth book/album doesn't exist.
I'm so, so disappointed at the prospect. I was really looking forward to this album.

on 2008-09-26 08:51 pm (UTC)The other thing I hate is bands injecting extra hype into proceedings by getting loads of other famous people on there. It works with hip hop, owing to the nature of the genre, but I'm still peeved that the last Queens album had Julian Casablancas on there. Eugh.

on 2008-09-26 10:18 pm (UTC)I am a universal soul and I can't really help it.
Hearing that Fall out boy will be putting those two on the album is a little surprising cuz they don't really do that sort of stuff, but at the same time, I love change.(And that's something I can't help either) So when I hear this, I'm curious. And that 's about it.
Plus kanye west's song is so FN addictive (in my opinion)so I wonder what he will bring to the album?

on 2008-09-27 01:53 pm (UTC)I could see Patrick doing something like this as a stand alone and it turning out okay. But this can't be good. Songs about attempting to kill yourself and girls either not loving you or loving you too much do not go with Kanye and Lil Wayne.

on 2008-09-27 04:29 pm (UTC)I'm all for artist evolution and the creative process and all that jazz, but I'm so on board with you right now. I just don't understand what happened on IOH and that lowered my expectations for anything they would put out since then. Much like Panic's ramdom change in sound- this does not feel organic to me. I just- Really Andy? Do you honestly want Lil Wayne on your album? Joe- how about you?
This seems like a Patrick thing to do because honestly he is just a music fiend. He likes anything good- but I just can't see this being the direction the entire band wants in. Pete is just a businessman and hardly counts as a musician in my mind anymore, which is not a bad thing! Just my opinion. Idk I'm not in their band, but I like pop-punk and I like hip hop and they could be very successfully without all this crossover nonsense. It doesn't feel honest and I don't like it.
Maple- why do I always get all tl;dr in your comments? Ugh shoot me.
