When it was my 30th, my mother brought my card and present to the restaurant and the waitress said "ooh is it a birthday?" and then gave us special service with a free (traditional Chinese) drink for me, and a free dessert that was a massive fruit platter. I would never have drawn attention to myself and actively tried to get the freebies but the attentive, thoughtful service was much appreciated.
