It's not as bad as that if you are diagnosed as lactose intolerant. It's just so strict because you need to cut out everything dairy to ensure a result. You can eat yoghurt (as it's pre-digested) and you can get treated milk. Although, of course it tastes nothing like normal milk.

Almond milk is a nice substitute for cows milk (and keeps *forever*, well a week at least!) and while I hate soya milk with a fiery passion, soya cheese isn't too bad.
