Suggestions for a car parents might buy their kid. Bearing in mind that the parents are reasonably well-off. Not rich, just pretty well paid.

oh...okay...

I really don't know. I had a Geo Metro for awhile which was amazing on gas milage. But I don't think they make those anymore. Mine was used, so *shrugs*. I guess I can't help there.

Well, I doubt it would be a brand new one. A relatively good one, but not brand new. Not seeing as the back story is that he totalled his mother's car the year before.

My dad gave me his Ford Explorer. It's a 1997, but when it came out it was about 20k.

We're talking about a 17 year old JT, here, dude. I can't imagine him with one of those. I think it needs to be something smaller.

I'm buying myself a Toyota Yaris. It's one of the cheapest cars on the market here in the states. And it gets 40 mile per gallon in city.

My parents would have bought it for me if they could.

Were they around six years ago?

No but the Toyota Echo was their small car back then.

They first came out in 1999, apparently, but I might skip naming it altogether.

Thanks, though.

Sorry, I wasn't driving 6 years ago. And my family had a Kia Sephia.

Well, in my head, it's a Yaris - so thank you for that.

I don't drive now, never mind knowing what you guys drive over there!

My parents bought my brother a Ford Tempo. They didn't buy me a damn thing, LOL. Yeah, can you tell who their favourite is? ;)

When I was in high school, a lot of friends got Chevy or Ford cars - maybe the occasional Pontiac.

Nothing too fancy, but still brand new - and typically 4 door cars.

Since I never drove, I never got a car - although my brother did get a used Ford Escort when he was about 17.

If it's set in or around Chicago, it would most likely be an American car rather than a foreign model. With all the steel mills, auto plants, Teamsters, etc. in the area, there's a lot of loyalty to the US car industry. When I was a kid, you'd get your tires slashed or your paint job keyed for having a foreign car parked in certain places. Obviously that's changed a lot, but there is still a higher percentage of US models in those parts than in other areas of the country.

Some uper middle class kids inherit grandparent's cars when they stop driving or buy new ones. Granma cars are are often Chryslers, Buicks, Lincolns or something like that. Bigger cars, expensive, usually four door models.

Thanks for this, hon.

I kind of anticipated a smallish car (young people over here in particular would have a relatively small car to start with).

The car in the story would probably be a relatively new but second-hand (used) vehicle. Very good condition, but not a family-sized car because his parents wouldn't trust him with anthing too big.
