So, being an avid researcher when writing fics, I was looking around to see what is taught in US school and at what age, when it comes to sex ed.

And I found this website, calling itself 'Real Sex Ed Facts'.

I have honestly never seen anything so out of touch with the way kids think or be quite so condescending about it.

For example, they recommend fishing as an alternative to sex. And apparently, on a date, even in the 21st century, the dude should order on behalf of his date. Presumably, lesbian dates don't get to eat.

Especially funny (at least for me, and probably for [livejournal.com profile] paintstripper) is the fact that the person who asks the first question on the Masturbation FAQ is called 'Mary Ellen'.

Is There Too Much of Masturbation?

Several years ago masturbation was considered to be a taboo topic but as sexual roles are changing people are becoming more open in discussing sex and masturbation. In America during the Puritan era parents would put bulky gloves or other devices on their children’s hands to prevent masturbation. It was considered a sin to allow a man’s seed to spill onto the floor. The children of this generation must have felt confused and guilty when they were only curious about their own sexuality. Everyone becomes curious about sex at a young age often leading to exploration of their sexual organs and masturbation. So how often is too often in the case of masturbation?

Doctors recommend that a man should not masturbate more than three times a week. Men should learn how to have an orgasm without ejaculating. By doing so a man can store bio-energy which causes his erections to last longer, his penis to be firmer and he will ejaculate at a larger volume. This makes for a more satisfying and lasting sexual experience.

Over-masturbation can cause many different problems in men. A loss of concentration can occur when a man masturbates too often. Also, the man may experience problems with his memory. This is a sign that the brain has experienced an over-loss of acetylcholine. The chemical levels of a man’s body must remain balanced to achieve a healthy lifestyle. Over-masturbation has a tendency to put strain on the motor nerves, acetylcholine and neuromuscular endings. This leads to low-levels of concentration, forgetfulness and eye floaters. All of these factors are contributed to your body’s loss of hormones and nutrients. This can be avoided by staying within a healthy range of masturbation.

For women there is really no level of over-masturbation unless masturbation becomes an addiction. [hah! in your face, boys.] If you are masturbating to the point that it hinders your daily routine this is probably too much. Masturbation allows a woman to explore and figure out how her own body works. This is extremely helpful when trying to achieve an orgasm. A woman’s orgasm is different from a man’s orgasm. A man will oftentimes orgasm during sexual intercourse where a woman will not. This is why masturbation is so helpful for a woman. It allows them to explore the different techniques of pleasurable touching and finding their own female “hotspots”. This allows the woman to be able to tell and show her partner what she enjoys sexually.

Masturbation is a healthy and natural sexually active. With many behaviors though, if masturbation is done in excess it can lead to changes in body chemistry, addiction and physiological and psychological imbalances. This is true for any behavior that is performed overly-excessively.

We have come a long way when it comes to discussing masturbation. In the light of this new era people still have many misconceptions about masturbation. Some people still believe that masturbation can cause one’s penis to fall off or that masturbation can lead to homosexuality or that sexually transmitted diseases can be acquired through masturbation. These are myths. Masturbation is a healthy sexual release. Masturbation is also a great way for a person to discover how their own bodies work sexually.

I honestly have no words.

So, wanking doesn't make a guy go blind, it just makes him senile instead? Actually, that explains a lot... :oP

American education in general scares me. Since when did UK = England..? (It probably will soon, but that's another issue entirely...)

You really do. So I at least know...

The website Scarleteen (http://www.scarleteen.com/) has the kind of sex ed that *should* be offered to teens, if people weren't afraid of The ChildrenTM actually knowing about sex.

But oh my God ... the Real Sex Ed Facts website is too damn funny (in a very tragic way). Kellie and I were dying over the idea that "lesbian dates don't get to eat", since there's no man to order first on the date!

Hehehe. It's pretty awful. And clearly written with girls in mind.

I pity any poor boy who comes across this site for advice (especially if he comes more than three times a week).

I have a feeling that for some teen boys, three times a *day* is not unheard of!

But three times a week? WTF? *boggles*

I wouldn't be surprised if that site were a spoof. Not that that sort of mentality doesn't exist... but still. A lot of spoof sites came out of the 'Abstinence is Best' campaign.

The "Abstinence is Best" campaign is/was a major joke. I think it was done to try and scare kids (ha!) and placate the parents. All it does is ramp up the rates for STDs and result in more kids that are having everything but "straight" sex - because they aren't told that oral and anal sex are considered sex, too.

If I wasn't in insurance - and wasn't so f'ing shy - I want to teach comprehensive sex ed.
