Madeleine sketch shows 'abductor'

The parents of missing Madeleine McCann have released images of a man they believe abducted their daughter in May from a Portuguese resort.

The artist's sketches show a man with dark, greasy collar-length hair and wearing a purple or maroon top with beige trousers, carrying a child.

The images were drawn by an FBI-trained forensic artist using details from a friend of the McCanns.

The friend saw the man but did not link him to the disappearance at the time.

Madeleine, from Rothley, Leicestershire, vanished from the family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz days before her fourth birthday.

Her parents Gerry and Kate were named as official suspects in September.

Jane Tanner was among a group of friends who dined with them on 3 May when they left Madeleine and their two other children asleep in an apartment nearby.

Blank face

Ms Tanner described the man she saw as aged about 35 to 40, 5ft 6in (1.7m) tall, and of slim build.

And the child he was carrying was described as wearing the same pyjamas as Madeleine.

However, his face has been left blank as Ms Tanner was not certain about some details.

The images were commissioned by private detectives working for the McCanns, their spokesman Clarence Mitchell said.

"This is another important phase of our investigation into Madeleine's abduction and we hope that this picture will be a very important reminder to anyone who was in the area on that night who may have seen this man."

What utter concocted bullshit. Why has this only been mentioned now? Why did she not say this earlier? Because fuck me, if I'd been involved in this scenario and I'd seen some fucker carrying a kid in the same pyjamas I would have been pretty fucking suspicious and actually said something at the time. I seem to remember them saying there was a man of about 5'10" seen carrying something wrapped in blankets, at first. Why was this guy not mentioned then?

The parents did it. I'm fucking telling you - as I have been all along - that hard-faced bitch did it. I actually actively hate the McCanns and want to see the twins taken from them - they shouldn't be allowed to keep them after losing the eldest in these circumstances because it was totally fucking negligent!

These people disgust me.

Ugh. I hate the McCanns with every fibre in my body. I agree with you - they totally did it.

Even if they didn't actively have anything to do with the kid's disappearance they are clearly negligent and unfit parents. Anyone less photogenic, less professionally qualified and less wealthy would have been prosecuted just for leaving those kids alone for any amount of time.

I completely agree. Except for the 'photogenic' part - they're both fug and she looks like a hard-faced cow.

Over here some people are trying to excuse their behavior by saying that it's a European cultural thing to be less anal about hovering over one's children. They say that the parents weren't far, it's common to leave children unattended, people leave babies outside shops in their prams, etc.

I think that's a bullshit, copout excuse. It's nice to see that not all Brits think what the McCanns did was okay.

It might be a European cultural thing, but it's not bloody British! No one would dare leave children alone, these days.

Never mind the fact that they could be abducted, imagine being that age and waking up in a strange place and not being able to find your parents.

I wouldn't be surprised, actually, if that's what happened: they left the kids alone, Maddie woke up and some how had an accident that killed her, and the parents covered it up with all this bullshit.

Definitely not in Portugal... In Portugal (and I think Italy and Spain) the kids on holiday would just stay up till 11pm and go to the cafés and bars with the parents...

In June in Sicily at 11pm we were in this ice cream shop and there were kids running about and Michael was a bit surprised they were up so late...

While there is no minimum age in law where a kid can be left alone, it is an offence to leave a child where there is risk to him or her. There are factors in determining whether or not it's acceptable. Age and how long you are going to leave them are two.

The twins are two years old. Madeline was four. I would argue that in that case there are *no* circumstances in which it's proper to leave them alone for any length of time.

Bearing in mind there was obvious risk (Madeline, after all, was abducted*), if it had happened in this country, they would've been prosecuted for this.

(from the NSPCC website.

Not that I've paid much attention to this, but if I had to, I'd probably go with your theory. The parents fed her sleeping pills/draught so she slept through being left alone and this somehow killed her. Everything else has been cover-up. I don't think the death was deliberate.

Ah, the one thing that has had me *really* thinking it was the parents who did it, was that if Madeline was honestly abducted by strangers, why didn't the strangers take the twins too? I mean, why, just single out Madeline?

Okay, maybe they were anxious that somebody was coming and took off with just Madeline but it still seems a bit fishy to me.

And uh, whoever this Jane Tanner may be, a so called 'friend' of the McCanns, should have pointed this out to the McCanns earlier, I mean since they're 'buddies' and all.

If I knew someone who was worrying a lot about their safety of their own child, eh as a good 'friend, wouldn't I try to tell everything I saw that night? The possibility of another kid having the same kind of PJs as Madeline seems extraordinary too.

Really, at this point in time, I think the parents did it and the only reason why this Jane Tanner came forward with the news is that she KNOWS they've murdered Madeline and just wants to save their asses or might have been intimidated into concocting this false piece of information. There is no 'other' man in the situation.

But honestly, it's not been unheard of for parents to murder their own offspring, just take one look at crime shows nowadays, they have had scenarios on the show with parents murdering their own children and where else could they have got the idea from? Real life cases taken from the past maybe?

And ehm, this might be slightly offtopic but why was there so much publicity given to this particular case? There are plenty of other missing children. It seems awfully strange that uh, was it JK Rowling and Richard Branson who donated money to the personal fund to help find Madeline. I mean, it boggles my mind that they donated only to this case, haven't there been other reports of missing children over the years too?
