According to Japanese legend, if a koi succeeded in climbing the falls at a point called Dragon Gate on the Yellow River it would be transformed into a dragon. So people basically started tattooing koi fish because it's association with strength and determination to overcome obstacles, courage and the ability to attain high goals. Then there are others who say it means good fortune or luck.
But then again there are some idiots who will tell you that it means love because they think that they can shorten the Japanese word for lover (Koibito). So when they call their boyfriend or girlfriend "koi" they're actually referring to them as a fish. Pfft, bunch of bakas.
Sorry, that was my Japanophile escaping. I'll try to lure her back in with the promise of some more anime.
Psha. They should get a Betta (Siamese Fighting Fish) tattooed instead. If you're going to get a fish tattooed, it should be a sexy fish. A sexy fish that fight to the death if you come anywhere near it.
I was definitely thinking about it. I bought a Betta about a month after I got to college because I couldn't stand not having something to take care of. He has been one of the only things keeping me from being completely lonely. I'm totally grateful to him and head over heels for the little guy. Dresden is kind of awesome.
