What point does this thing actually serve?
(Also: if you're going to add me, tell me who you are if your username is different...)

on 2008-09-20 11:28 pm (UTC)(The problem with Facebook is that if I'm active on it, I have friends who will want to waste my time through it. Not maliciously, just in the way that they have time to play with stupid "send xyz" apps or invites for "I support abc" groups, when all I want from Facebook is a convenient way to keep in touch with old friends who have I have no other common system with. I therefore minimise my time and presence on Facebook, so that I can actually get things done.)
I use Twitter to record crap that's not really worth a whole LJ entry. I'm also expeimenting with using it to put up "teaser"/reminder entries that will be expanded into LJ entries later - for instance, my one entry on Friday related to fraudulent activity on my Vodafone account. I'd hoped to write about that sooner, but things got in the way. However, having twitted/tweeted about it has kept it in my memory, handily adding a fairly accurate timestamp for the event as well.
Where Twitter sucks is that it has no access control whatsoever. Live on Twitter = Live in public, as far as I can see. Even Facebook is better in that regard.
Hence my using it in a complementary manner to LJ.

on 2008-09-20 11:47 pm (UTC)However, I wouldn't want an SMS alert anyway. If someone wants to tell me something via SMS, they have no need to put Twitter in the route!
I also have LJ access on my phone, but LJ takes up more bandwidth and is a bit more fiddly. A while back, I tried voice posting, but that didn't work well enough for me.
If http://m.twitter.com didn't exist, then Twitter would be utterly useless to me. But that interface is so clean, light, and quick that it's made Twitter worth using instead of LJ.
I'll never be a heavy Twitter user, but it does look useful in a niche way, especially when combined with LoudTwitter. In fact, without LoudTwitter and http://m.twitter.com, I'd have just deleted my account - it'd be useless!
