I posted this at [livejournal.com profile] icecreamhdaches earlier, and I just wanted to repost it here because I feel it bears repeating:

Can everyone take a step back from bitching about Victoria for a second and consider that this might actually be damage control?

Patrick and Ashlee are under contract with their respective record companies. They are not allowed to work on other people's music for release without consent. If they admit that they were involved, this could get them both in deep shit.

Plus, Pete only said recently that he doesn't want to 'sell' his relationship, so having his girlfriend recording with his best friend and a girl from his record label (even for fun while dicking around on tour or in the studio) isn't doing a whole lot to support that, is it?

People really need to understand that the way you read things in the press is contrived to make a story out of events that really don't warrant it. We don't know the extent to which they were involved because it has come through the MTV spin cycle and the Pete PR blender.

I feel really bad for Victoria, personally. I think Gabe's right and she was just trying to give credit where it was due. People would have been just as harsh to her if it did come out later that Ashlee kind of came up with the chorus while they were joking around on tour, and Vicky-T then put it in the song or something, or if they found out Patrick had made a short sequence while showing her GarageBand and she'd used that, and she hadn't said anything.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt, myself.

Great minds think alike. Honestly, I didn't even think about the label/legal stuff till you mentioned it though. I just figured it was Pete trying to do image control because Ashlee was involved. Like I've said before, I'm not a huge fan of Vicky-T but I do feel a bit sorry for her here. I don't think she would make up a bold faced lie and I think her original post was probably true she just didn't realize she was getting herself into deep shit.
Patrick must feel so scandalous, this is the most drama he's ever been involved in. Somebody needs to make a Patrick macro that says 'oh the dramaz' :)

I agree. I think what Gabe said probably sums it up pretty well (though I do think Patrick was being totally honest in his statement as well). I think Victoria was just trying to give credit where credit is due.

We should give Victoria the benefit of the doubt and I hope it all works out for her. I do feel bad for her and I agree, had she not revealed it and it came out later, people would have hated her even more.

thank you.
Vicky wouldn't like about something like that.
1st of all cuz Patrick and her seem like bffs lol
2nd because Who the fuck would name-drop Ashlee Simpson? Especially when Vicky's waaaaaaaay more talented. In fact, more people didn't want to hear the song becuase of Ashlee's involvement than wanted to. amiright?

The contract thing makes total sense.

and by "like about something like that"
I obviously meant "lie about something like that"

It's the fact that she sold the track, that's the problem, I think. If the track was free, it wouldn't have been an issue. But since she put their names on it, and then sold it, Patrick and Ashlee's record companies are owed part of the money.

I couldn't give a fuck about the record labels - it's the fan reactions that bother me.

I mean, that's probably the reason she had to say they didn't collaborate on it.
