The Sunday before last, standing in the cold outside Birmingham LG/NEC, I told Joe Trohman that his girlfriend was "absolutely adorable". They'd been back and forth together all day, looking equally dorky and sweet together - he held open doors for her, she waited in the open door way of the bus for him to finish a conversation with a tech, while wearing only jeans and a checkered shirt in the bitterly cold British weather.
Joe's reaction to my comment was to seem momentarily surprised, and then proudly say, "Oh - thank you!"
I thought that was it, but then he paused for a moment, his head slightly tilted as if weighing up what he was about to say, and then he just blurted, "Actually... she's my fiancee..."
I think I squeed at him, babbled, "Dude! That's fucking amazing! Congratulations!" at which point he went all coy and said thank you again, still seeming quite pleased with himself.
As you would. The kid's future missus is gorgeous. She seems so natural and genuine. Exactly the kind of girl I go for. Not overly flowery, but still clearly a girl. Matte and I were thinking about asking if he wanted to share... (He's a dude. He'd probably just ask if he could watch...)
But yes. That's it, kids - and both
edgiko and
fadefromblack can verify that I'm not pulling this out of my arse, because they're the only people I dared to tell on the night - via texts and sidekick IM - because I didn't want to steal his thunder or allow people to invade his privacy.
I love that kid to death and I'm so happy that he's happy and has found someone who quite clearly does love him in all his ridiculous, fuzzy glory. I so wish that the same could be said of other chaps we all know. Julie and I spent the whole ride home flailing and saying, "OMG JOE'S GETTING MARRIED! I CAN'T BELIEVE JOE'S GETTING MARRIED! I'M SO PROUD OF HIM!" and I think that sums it up. I was so happy for them that I couldn't contain myself, hence the rather mysterious post (and well done to those of you who guessed what the news was - sorry I couldn't confirm and grabby hands about it).
I wish them both very, very many long and happy years togetherunless Joe would like to direct Marie in my direction and save Patrick from the clutches of the Wicked Witch of the West Coast, that is.
