18/11/2007 - It's not racism if you're talking about the Welsh.

Apparently, this is me 'naming names' - also known as the person in question knowing exactly who they were.
I was going to actually post some of the conversation in question, to allow people to make their own decisions about who was in the wrong - but a) I'm not quite as childish as some people would like to think and b) I have more compassion for the stuff in there which was genuinely personal and not hysterical racism.
I don't believe, however, in letting people make racist comments about their friends, and at the time I did say this:

Perhaps the saddest thing, is that aside from being angry at her behaviour, I won't mourn the loss of this 'friendship' at all and I doubt it would have been so convincing for Amanda if she hadn't already had doubts about the value and integrity of the friendship herself. After all, I wasn't there, but she was.

on 2008-01-08 09:52 pm (UTC)If I want to carry an Ontario flag around Newfoundland, you can be damn sure I will. If I want to carry the Newfoundland Republic flag instead of the provincial flag, I will. And anyone who tries to say I don't belong there with my particular flag of choice would probably get punched in the face. I haven't always had a good experience with the people here, but I would NEVER dare tell someone they couldn't fly a flag of their choosing.
You were rightly upset, I would have been as well. It was a rather ignorant thing for her to say.

on 2008-01-08 09:56 pm (UTC)I'm not even Welsh and I've taken a Welsh flag to a Manics concert there, before.
The Welsh as a people are very territorial, because they've lived under English rule for centuries. I can't blame them for being pissy with us. But there is no justifiable excuse for saying that the Welsh should not be allowed to carry their national flag to suppot their countrymen.
