They are a complete pair of wankers. But I do agree with Noel that an act like Jay-Z just doesn't belong at Glastonbury.
It's on a farm in a mystical area of Somerset. It has its own stone circle, a field comprised entirely of inhabited tipis, and a Pagan/New Age reserve known as the Healing Fields. It has a massive family focus - with family camping fields - a Greenpeace field, and a craft field.
It focuses on local businesses, on conservation and a very hippie-ish ethos with a long history of charitable causes and a very socialist nature.
Bling, girls and guns is so at odds with that, that having Jay-Z headline is like having drum and bass at a tea dance in a retirement home. Noel is right. It doesn't fit, and it has nothing to do with Jay-Z being black. Eminem wouldn't fit, really, either - regardless of what Dizzee Rascal says. Worthy of note, is thet DR is playing Glastonbury himself, this year. I can support him on the Kanye front, though - Kanye would work much better, for his activist nature. But he couldn't pull of headlining.
dizzee rascal's playing reading & leeds, down the bill a bit, & i think he slips in okay in there. i have heard it in stories that all sorts of people want to go see him there. but agree nevertheless with your comment on jay-z & glastonburyness.
hip hop you don't stop. haha oh Jigga what are you doing there? Come back to New York. Brooklyn loves you baby! Yeah it's a bit ridic that he's playing Glasto.
If you're a fan of Kanye, you'll probably dig Lupe Fiasco. He's such an anomaly because he also tend to steer clear of guns&money rap but focus on being yourself. He like comic books and skateboreding, so that's what he raps about.
He's the reason all these 'hip hop' kids started skateboarding two years ago. But that aside, I love him.
Dude. I can't take that guy seriously. I saw him jump up on a part of the stage at the HCT when they interrupted a perfectly good set with twenty minutes of WASTING MY TIME, and almost faceplant because he was wearing his trousers so low.
Twat.
I don't actually like hip hop. I can name four songs in total that I can listen to without getting a migraine, so unfortunately, Lupe Fiasco isn't going to do it for me, even if he pulls his trousers up. XD
Yeah, it was funny. They brought him out as a special surprise guest in Chicago and Pete and Andy were standing on the side of the stage - and they both started looking all excited, and then Andy realised that the ENTIRE FRONT SECTION was just standing there going :| and his smile quickly faded.
We'd all been there since like 9.00am, queuing in the blistering heat - I could show you my sunburn - and stood through Cobra, Paul Wall, TAI, +44 and then just when we were getting into FOB's set, they stopped to let this guy and his mate come on and arse around.
Amused we were not, by this stage.
I have nothing against the guys and girls in the genre who have the imagination and the balls to stand out and say something relevant, but the music itself gives me headaches. Seriously.

on 2008-04-22 10:25 pm (UTC)For the record, I happen to think the Gallagher brothers are douches. But then, Kanye's a douche too and I still love him :)
Jesus Walks is probably my favourite song of his.
