Further to yesterday's post about the Summer of Like, I'm actually thinking about seeing if I get this job and how much they offer me, and maybe possibly trying to organise something.

With the right people, I think that could be amazing.

Answer me some questions.

[Poll #1294037]

This would most likely NOT involve bandom escapades, just bandom types on a holiday in a bandom-related city. Unless they decided to play shows in town, then.

Edit: I suggest this hotel. It's a known chain, well located, and they do discounts for bookings of ten or more rooms.

Edit #2: Alternatively - we could rent apartments. this would work out about the same price as the Days Inn, and less if people were prepared to share double beds with people (as little as $50 per night). I'd consider it, personally.

*HAAAAAAAAANDS*

i keep getting itchy for going back there. i know i haven't exactly travelled the world, but at this point, chicago is my favourite city i've ever visited. except london, but it doesn't have the same novelty.

i said mid-to-late july because of university, but i just checked, & term tends to finish around the 12-15th of june, so. (also, reading festival is towards the end of august, & i do like going there. ;;^____^)

damn, i wish i were 21. next summer, i'll only be a few months off. age restrictions are irksome when you're so close to being over them.

Yeah, it's really bloody annoying, isn't it? I could probably go any time over the summer, but I'd like to have as much saving time as possible!

Also: Chicago is the most amazing city in the world. The hotel I'm thinking of is exactly in the part of town where I'd like to live (and in fact, the area where Joe seems to have spent most of his adult life, because it's just that cool there).

i don't think i ever thanked you for all the advice you gave me about places to visit - it really helped, so thanks v. v. much. we saw all the places like navy pier (went to see dark knight at the imax there), & boystown obviously, which was fucking awesome. best vegan diner ever there, & i'm not even vegan. we went back twice. visited a whole bunch of vintage clothing stores & spent a lot of time on the metro, just because public transport is fun, especially when you get to see the city, like when we rode on the elevated track. oh, & we went to wrigley park & the clan store, obviously. so yeah, seriously, thankyou for the tips, it helped a lot. ^_____^

No problem. I'm glad you had a good time! Did you go up to Borders?

*headscratch* we went to a borders, but i can't remember if it was the borders. remind me where it was? the only thing we didn't get a chance to do was go towards glenview & the north suburbs, because none of us were old enough to rent a car, despite having two fully licensed drivers, & looking at maps it seemed like figuring out the public transport would be trickier up there than in central chicago where there's a metro or bus stop everywhere you want to go.

I think you must have gone to this one, then:

It's the one I used for TWNW, but Patrick actually worked in this one, in the suburbs:

It's where Winnetka meets Glenview across the I-94, basically... which stands to reason, doesn't it?

Yeah, I meant to note that in the question, because some people's birthdays will be in between times.

It would be awesome if you did come along.

HAHAHAHA. That would be epically expensive, but still fun.

Can you imagine like, 10-15 bandom girls rolling in at 8.30 in the morning?

Haha, I don't even know why I did this poll. It's just me being wistful or something. You can totally disregard me. =(

Well, you never know. You'd be sixteen by then, so just see what happens.

I'll be moving to Chicago towards the end of the summer I think, but I don't know exactly when that will be. I can probably swing a trip before that. In fact it will probably be useful to find accomadation etc. You lot can help me find an apartment

Anyway. This sounds like such an awesome idea.

I have to do the majority of my PhD research over there. It's strange that I just happened to have an idea where all my research would have to be done in a city I love...

History. Concentrating on women's history in Chicago.

Oooh. Cool.

Matte wants to study American History, but the college that she wants to go to doesn't have any connections with colleges in Chicago, which sucks.

Yeah, that sucks. I was lucky because there's a dude in my department who specialises in Chicago history and has a million connections. I don't know of the top of my head, but if you want I'll ask around and see if there's anyone else in this country that specialises in Chicago history and find out where they are.

I think she's already submitted her choices. She's got her heart set on Swansea.

Ahh, oh well. You never know though. History's a subject where new people come in all the time and bring new bits to a department.

It's not so much that, it's that she wants to take her year in America in Chicago - but she can't because their affliate colleges are all outside of the city.

I know, man.

I'd love to live there. Jay is always asking when I can emigrate, and believe me, the moment I find a way, I'm gone.

Me too. My friends and I have a standing joke about one of them green card marrying me.

Actually I'm lucky though, because with a PhD in American History I hope I'll be able to find a job over there eventually.

Adding to the what I said in the poll. Anything earlier than August is impossible, any time August is absolutely fine. Early September also fine. Anything after that is impossible.

I'm so up for it dates permitting and y'know, having been able to save enough money (which shouldn't be too much of a problem given the amount of time I have to save).
