Now, I know not everyone on my flist is a Cobra Starship fan - some of you haven't a fucking clue who they are - but almost all of you are slashers, so you NEED - UNDOUBTEDLY, UNQUESTIONABLY NEED - to listen to this track. It's an affectionate piss take of Katy Perry's song, 'I Kissed A Girl' redone as 'I Kissed A Boy' and made much darker (I say 'affectionate' because I'm assuming that as she's their friend's girlfriend they don't share my opinion that she's the Anti-Christ).

For those who aren't familiar, the guy singing it is a 6'4" Jew from Uruguay, called Gabe Saporta and he looks like this:

Warning: if you click this link you will immediately want to have sex with five whole new people. )

Oh, and when he sings this stuff? He's not really kidding...

Dear Patrick,

This is how to use your amazing voice properly. YOU NAILED THIS. No Mariahing. Just singing. Just using your fucking range the way it should be used.

I just fell in love with your voice again.

Please, please, please remember how you did this.

Lovelovelove,
Rosie.

PS. This sounds so much like Kate Bush it's surreal. She's my aunt's cousin, you know.

There is one particular piece of music they use on the Sky TVGuide which REALLY reminds me of the W Hotel in Chicago.

It honest to God makes me want to be on holiday and it drives me insane with wanderlust every time I try to find something to watch. Dammit!

I've just been to an unexpected gig to see my cousin Stevie's band, Over and Out.

We checked my MySpace over dinner, at about 18.35 and were at the venue - remember that one at the end of my road? - within fifteen minutes.

While we were there, we discovered a band called Out of Sight. Their singer, Jake, is lovely - they sound like Spitalfield with a very young Patrick on vocals. You should definitely check them out.

We also discovered that at least two members of Over and Out live in the street that runs parallel to ours, which is really weird.

It was a surprisingly good day, today. We had a shit ton of fun. And we think Matte needs to come and live in Brighton, for serious.

So... I hate it. In all sincerity, I really, really hate it. I hate it more than I hated Golden, and that's saying something.

Elvis Costello sounds EXACTLY like Patrick would sing if he was staggering home after the pub and about eight pints. He sounded so much like Patrick that when Julie heard it this morning she actually thought it WAS Patrick, singing badly.

It's just... tacky. And way overblown. And I honestly think that if people didn't know it was about Patrick, a huge number of them would be much less stoked on it than they're claiming to be.

I'm sure that under all that over-production there are some lovely lyrics, but the lyrics are not the only thing the makes a song, and I physically cringe when I listen to it. It's just... it sounds like something from a really cheesy musical, where all the male cast is singing about the main guy.

America's Suitehearts is the last chance for them to convince me. I think they've at least gotten Lil Wayne out of the way somewhere in the medley on Catch, but if they've fucked with the production on Suitehearts as well, that is truly it for me and this album. I love the guys, still, and I'll continue to go to shows and follow their career in the hope that something awesome will return to their music, but this album will not make it to my shelves.

What a disappointment.

I just found the MySpace for my mum's cousin's band, Druid. I knew Marillion had cited them as one of their influences, but I'd never realised they were this well known, back then.

Bloody hell.

The singer, Dane, is my mum's cousin - my nan's younger sister's son. I was only in contact with him about a year ago, regarding our genealogy searches and stuff. It's his eldest daughter, Micah (although I've a feeling they spelled it differently) that the baby girl in the Mpreg is named after.

I figured out the exact phrasing of what pissed me off about the last album, and what pisses me off from reports of the new album:

THEY'RE TRYING TOO HARD.

That just sums it up for me.

“Knowing the right people has finally paid off. A reliable source told me today that Kanye West and Lil Wayne are going to appear on Fall Out Boy’s new album, Folie à Deux." via www.supjustin.com

If this is true, I will not be giving them a penny for this album.

What the fuck is wrong with a Fall Out Boy album just being Fall Out Boy? Yeah, they can pull off the odd cameo - Justin Pierre with a very subtle backing vocal; someone on guest keyboards, maybe - but why stuff like this?

I hate rap. I hate it, almost without exception. I'm not even exaggerating when I say it gives me headaches. I can't listen to a full GCH album, even. I do like Kanye, and I do like some of his songs. But they're his and I listen to them maybe one at a time, and rarely. When I listen to Fall Out Boy, it's Fall Out Boy I expect to hear. Not some kind of cabaret of artists artists from a genre I largely loathe.

I just honestly don't get why they'd do this. It was like bringing out Lupe Fiasco in the middle of their set at the Chicago HCT - more than half the crowd stood there looking bemused and clapped politely. He wasn't why they'd turned up, and after that waiting, they didn't particularly appreciate his set interrupting their show. It's likely to be the same with this album.

Before anyone REALLY PISSES ME OFF by saying it's "their album and [I] don't have to buy it" - I don't plan to, if this is what it's going to be. But I will be extremely disappointed because I've been waiting for this album as much as anyone else has. I don't expect them to carry on making the exact same album over and over, I even understand that they've grown up since they started making albums, but I'm sick of having hip hop forced into my record collection.

The thing is, Fall Out Boy are regarded as a rock or pop-punk band, and that is the genre that the majority of their fans will be into. Rock and hip hop may occasionally cross over - but they are not the same thing. If this turns into what amounts to a collaboration of FOB+assorted hip hop artists, I can really see them alienating a lot of fans. There will be some, of course, who will love whatever they put out because of the fact it's got 'Fall Out Boy' on the case - but those for us for whom the actual music is an issue that isn't necessarily nullified by who is making it, our favourite band basically abandoning the genre that made them isn't going to be okay.

I love these kids, and it's my loyalty to them and knowing that they can make some pretty awesome music, from the first three albums they put out, that stopped me giving up on them over Infinity on High, which was the biggest load of shit anyone in bandom has ever put out. [livejournal.com profile] fadefromblack and I used to spend hours talking about how it was just a bad album - a blip on the radar - but it seems like we were wrong.

If this really does happen, and they ruin their album by putting Lil Wayne or any other hip hop artist on there, I will have the same situation I had in the Harry Potter fandom: anything after the fourth book/album doesn't exist.

I'm so, so disappointed at the prospect. I was really looking forward to this album.

Does anyone else miss bands releasing real singles?

You remember the kind: you'd get all excited waiting for the release day, then you'd head down to the local record shop on your lunchbreak or after school/work, then you'd get home and actually put it in a CD player to listen.

And there would be B-sides! Actual B-sides! Other songs, not related to the album - not just remixes or cover versions - real, additional tracks from your favourite band. Bonus music for being dedicated enough to go and buy the singles.

Now, you get shitty, lower-quality versions on iTunes, no B-sides and you can't use it on more than a couple of formats. Yeah, they might be cheaper, but they're not tangible. When I buy something, I want to be able to hold it in my hand, y'know?

And what especially pisses me off is now Fall Out Boy are releasing their new album on iTunes track by track. Sure, there will be a CD on November 4th, but for those of us who prefer to do the ritual - the going to the shop, the peeling off the plastic and the reading the inlay booklet during that first listen; hearing the whole album in order, as it was planned to be heard - are fucked. Sure, we can wait for the new album to come out in the shops, but this is the internet age. This is the blog age, where people will be posting reviews within minutes of the tracks being made available. For anyone who doesn't want to be spoiled and want to discover the tracks in context by ourselves, it means avoiding the internet, or the comms where it would be likely to be discussed.

Yes, leaks happen; but with leaks, there is generally a divide between those who will wait for the official version, and those who will go ahead and download the music. If the music is made legally available ahead of time, presumably in an attempt to curb the leaks and promote interest, many more people will have access to it and will be discussing it openly, assuming everyone has heard it.

This may even be detrimental to the album sales (the single didn't even make the top twenty in Billboard's Hot 100, and in the Canadian chart has already dropped to #89 in its second week), because as soon as it is made available on iTunes, it can be decoded and leaked to the general public - which may result in lower album sales. Infinity on High was leaked a few days before it was due for release, but a strong moral section of the fanbase refused to download illegally and casual fans were unlikely to know with any great certainty where to access the leak. If more people have early access to the songs, they can be reposted more widely.

In a nutshell, I think this iTunes thing is a stupid idea and the more I see Pete promoting it, the more I want to shake him. People aren't buying the single because they already have it and there is no incentive to spend money on something they can get for free behind closed doors. To the best of my knowledge, the single doesn't have a CD release date (if it does, please tell me so I can go and buy it), and if that is a case there is nothing for fans who will have accessed the track already (almost all illegally, I'm fairly certain) to gain from spending money through Apple (who I dislike intensely anyway).

In fact, I resent being forced to give money to a company I dislike, just so I can hear music from my favourite band. I don't own an iPod, or an iPhone, I didn't even have iTunes installed until I wrote a review on it for HRE - I hadn't actually opened the programme since.

Why should I be dictated to about where to spend my money?

The more I think about this, the angrier I get.

So... the new TAI song, About A Girl doesn't sound like them at all; does sound like someone put 2005 on a CD, though.

It's not a bad song, it just doesn't stand out... It could be any number of bands from the last few years. And it does remind me quite a lot of the recently demised Spitalfield, in some ways. They grew up in the same scene, you know.

I can feel a little Jimmy Eat World in there, as well - which is interesting, because I was talking to someone on my flist about them, recently.

Mostly, I'm just a little O_o at the moment. I don't dislike it, and I could probably enjoy singing along to it, but I hope the rest of the album has more kick than this.

This has got to be one shittest tracks of all time. The guy's called Ironik, and I hope he was being, because aside from the fact that it sounds like he's being accompanied either by Alvin the Chipmunk or that dragon from the ringtone advert, the words are just terrible.

Dear 'Black Kids',

Please sake your stupid name and stop trying to be The Cure, because you're a bit shit.

Sincerely,
Rosie.

---

Modern music is really starting to piss me off. Mostly, because it isn't actually modern. Q TV has just played:

The Last Shadow Puppets - who clearly think they're the new The Jam and apparently still living in about 1962. Then they played the Ting Tings, who are frankly just shitty, sub-Blonie bollocks in ugly tights. And then they killed it off with Black Kids (of whom just one is black, and in fact, he looks more Māori than anything) and who aren't just influenced by The Cure, they may as well be poor-man's covers band.

Oh, HAI, The Kooks and your shitty late-70s pseudo pop.

Oh, and now Alphabeat are on, and they sound like Elton John being spanked by Madonna in 1984.

WTF, MUSIC? WHAT. THE. FUCK.
