So, since Pete and Ashlee announced their baby, and FoE posted a poll asking people to guess what the baby would be, some people in fandom have been freaking out about how the mother deserves privacy and how dare they ask this question all the time.

I'm not a mother, but I don't think it's a big deal - what do you think?

Personally? I wouldn't care. I don't really see what the big deal is, as a lot of parents want to know what the sex is before it's born anyway. But what would piss me off? Is people touching my belly. I would get really pissed off if people started doing that.

WORD. If it's rude to touch womens' (or anywone's) bellies when they're not pregnant, it's just as rude when they are. It's not like their belly suddenly belongs to the baby or anything.

It would be damn annoying, because I'd have to keep telling them I didn't know because I hadn't had an ultrasound (this is only true in the case of my first three, but still. I wouldn't have one if I were pregnant now, so it still would apply).

It's just one of those questions that gets asked. It's not a big thing.

It's a big deal when the questioner assumes that you have a preference for one gender over the other. It's not so bad with a first baby, although with so many thousands of people invested in the sprog of these two I'm sure that many of them think they'd be better off with one vs. the other. Once you have one child, people assume you want the other gender. Once you have two of the same gende, *everyone* comments with gems like, "Trying for your (insert gender you don't have yet) now?" Wugh.

People are invasive and inappropriate when you're having a baby. It's unavoidable. Being famous, it's much worse, If the worst thing that happens is a gender guessing poll on the internet, they'll be lucky parents.

The irony is, Pete owns the fucking website it's on!

I don't see any problem with the poll at all. It's just a little bit of fun.

I think I'd be annoyed if someone thought it was their god given right to know the sex of my baby, just because they could see I was pregnant/I'd told them I was. Especially if I didn't know myself, it would drive me crazy. But I think the worst part would be someone going "Oh I bet you want a little girl/boy, don't you!" or like [livejournal.com profile] lordgroovius said, someone feeling like they can just come up and touch my belly just because there's a baby in there.

People can ask, but you don't have to tell them :) I reckon I'd be more annoyed if I was on preg#2 (HA - one is scary enough!) and they assumed I wanted the opposite gender this time. I hate all that gender crap that surrounds babies anyway. Y'know, pink for girls, blue for boys, yuk.
