Across the road from our house, they're holding a talk with Gabriel Kuhn tonight, about his book on straight edge.

The book has contributions from Andy*, which makes it particularly interesting.

I'd really like to go, but [livejournal.com profile] shiny_starlight is working and I don't want to go by myself.

I'm a bit scared of the anarchists, to tell you the truth. I'm nervous that I won't be proactive enough for them and that I would be tempted to point out that organised anarchists with a designated and permanent HQ are possibly slightly missing the point.

* He did come back to me, btw; next tour I have promised to stay and say 'hi' properly... looks like we [livejournal.com profile] shiny_starlight will be driving to that gig, then.

It's not that exciting but I wear them so rarely (and with heels - hence the way I look like I'm stretched and weird) that I thought I'd post it.

Jubekka and I have lived in Brighton for a year, today, so we're going out for dinner at a Japanese restaurant near the Pavillion. Salmon Teriyaki HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Woop woop!

Moving to Brighton and taking the job at Babel was clearly the best thing I've ever done.

The people I work with are awesome. Brighton is awesome. This summer is going to be brilliant.

Brighton Rocks.

Today was a nice day (or should I say 'afternoon' seeing as I got up just before 3pm?). We went down to the beach and listened to live Reggae in the sunshine. Can't go wrong.

OMGFLAIL!

No, I don't have a cold, I always sound like this.

FOOD.

I forgot to mention, we have an AWESOME shop near us called Taj the Grocer. It sells MOUNTAIN JEW DEW and loads and loads of dairy-free cheeses, yoghurts and milks. It has loads of different meat-free products, as well, which will make feeding all our veggie friends much easier.

It'll also mean I can go back to a stricter ethivore diet as soon as possible as well.

They have a meat/deli counter as well, and they're an organic company - that's the entire point of the store - so you know it would be from a decent source.

Seriously EPIC win.

They do all the kind of exciting ingredients I used to cook with as well... I can't wait until I have a decent job so I can spend a shit ton of money on really extravagant ingredients.

Nom nom nom.

You see this? Yeah. A murder, right?

Happened less than 400 feet from my front door last night, while Matte and I were sleeping in a room overlooking the street outside my house.

Julie and I went to Sainsbury's earlier and there was a blue screen up across the bottom of the road opposite Preston Street and loads of police cars and vans, including a Scientific Support Unit. When we walked down Western Road later, there was another section of road cordoned off by some bins and being guarded by two officers.

Bear in mind that this is just a few months after we discovered an internet cafe on Preston Street was used as the base for a spy to sell secrets to Iran.

Seriously, WTF? In London I lived in the Let's Murder Our Child Because The Social Are Too Stupid To See We're Doing It zone (Victoria Climbie and Baby P both died within about a half mile of my old house) and now I live in crazyville.

HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!

You know the spy, right? The one selling stuff to the Iranian military? That internet cafe he used is about 200ft from my house. O_O

Things which are weird: sitting on the beach amongst the day trippers, on a beautiful morning, wearing a hoodie and shades and listening to Interpol while watching the waves.

Oh, and apparently the best rock club/bar in Brighton is at the bottom of our road.

Okay, so - we've got the contract, now, and I can finally say: remember the flat we were going to move to in Brighton?

Change of plan.

We will begin moving into our new house on Saturday. It's closer to the sea (yeah, I know - even closer) and closer to the centre of Brighton; maybe five minutes from the shopping centre. It's like a little, old fisherman's cottage; two really good sized bedrooms, a really decent sized kitchen and lounge (especially for the two of us) and then a kooky little bathroom with low ceilings and a sunken bath in the basement. It doesn't have a garden, but it does have a balcony, and our neighbours seem quite friendly.

For anyone who knows Brighton, it's between Regency Square and Argos on Western Road.

We're really happy with it. It's in the right area super-close to loads of Far Eastern restaurants, it's basically perfect for us, and the landlady is really nice.

There are no plans for a leaving or warming party (because it's going to be a strictly DRY house and I know that with the exception of [livejournal.com profile] likethepaint and [livejournal.com profile] bikerkiller, who lives in Chi anyway, you're all a bunch of fucking pissheads) but for those of you in London, we could meet up for coffee.

[livejournal.com profile] jackie_brown, whenever you're not studying/writing/trying to decide which Transformer has the most gravitas, we would love for you to come down and bestow the happy. We will of course return the favour in the form of goat's cheese.

(Anyone who does not know what the fuck we're talking about... well. The irony is, none of it is that cryptic.)

Matte and Lib have already booked their sofas, or expressed an interest in doing so - if anyone else wants to visit (you're not obliged to camp out, although, given that we're moving to Brighton it does seem somehow apt) you know where we are.

On Saturday, we'll record a before video, and then later we'll do an 'after' so you can see what we've got and what we've done with it.

But for now, to bed, because I feel like I have bleach in my eyes, rather than just mascara.

So, you might know that Julie and I are getting a place together, in the next couple of months - right now, it's looking like it will almost certainly be in Brighton (or Hove, if we have to) so [livejournal.com profile] fredtheguava ultimately won! (Rachael, if you're interested on taking us up on the offer let us know, because we'll be looking at apartments really soon; it's cool if you don't want to, but it's better to know before we get somewhere) - and we've spent this evening planning how to furnish it (because to be honest, the good apartments are all empty possessions).

I've decided I want a kind of girly (! - I know! Girly! Me!) shabby chic bedroom, and I just bought the first item for it off eBay.

How cute is that throw? ♥ I'm going to get a basic wooden bed and worry about the rest as we go on. As long as I have somewhere decent to sleep, the living room is a bigger priority. We're looking at green and chocolate for that, and at getting a fancy, green patterned seat and a plain sofa made by a Welsh company. I'm pretty sure they made my mum's old sofa and it was fine, and really cheap.

We have plans. And payouts coming to us to buy it with. It's looking good.

But yes. It's all getting quite real.

So, I just got back from the Cobra Starship show in Brighton with [livejournal.com profile] fredtheguava. We sat on the beach for a while before we queued up, and it was so good to be by the sea, again. I miss open water so much, when I can't be near it - so much so, that I really do find myself wanting to move down there, now. I was excited about the prospect before, when I was trying to get into BIMM (although they ended up cancelling the course), and the more I think about it, the more I want to get down there.

Obviously, my first choice would still be Chicago, but in between times I don't know if I can handle London for much longer. It's so dirty here. As Rachael and I mentioned earlier, when you've been out in London for any significant period of time, you come home to cough up/sneeze black stuff. For someone with hypersensitive lungs this is not good, and probably part of the reason I'm so susceptible to chest infections in the last few years (namely, since I've been living here, in or close to Central London).

There's also a real feeling of claustrophobia that I've been getting in the last year or two. It is so rare for me to leave the city for any period of time (the furthest I usually go is the suburbs, to visit family, 25 minutes outside of the centre); getting out to Somerset and Sussex in the last few days, has kind of reminded me what else is out there. THERE ARE FIELDS, U GUISE! And hills. And woodland. And the sea. In London there is nothing but buildings and traffic - and mostly we travel underground, and never see more than the five or ten minute journeys to and from home/work and the nearest tube station. The tube is convenient (except before 9am and after 4.45pm on weekdays) but it turns you into subterranean drones. You never get to see the rest of the city. On weekends, the place is overrun with zombie-like binge drinkers from the suburbs.

I'm rapidly growing to hate it, here.

Brighton itself is so very English, and I totally feel that. It has the pier and the promenade you expect in English seaside towns, an extremely well-known gay community (which, apparently, I'd fit in pretty well), a pretty good music scene, the Lanes (which is the boutiquey shopping district), it has the sea - which is a huge factor for me, I've always wanted to live by the sea - and most importantly, it's just not London.

Right now, moving away feels like the smartest idea ever.
